Hey everybody...
I registered for the FireHand forum back on its opening night and hadn't given it too much thought afterwards...now of course as many of you know there is this giveaway thing...but I'm looking to make more of a contribution to this page regardless...
You know me by hockeycollector3 on the breaks and here, but you can also call me Ryan, my given name. I have been active in the hobby going on 23 years and I'm only 31 now, so do the math. I was among the last kids to take their doubles and checklists to recess to try and fill my sets on my limited allowance. Like some of you, the bug bit me early and stayed. I began collecting the year of the "hockey boom" of 1990 where the new companies such as Upper Deck, Score and Pro Set made their deep end dive into hockey to compete with Topps/OPC, the hobby juggernaut. I have also at various times dabbled in all the major sports and plenty of non-sports stuff as well.
Stating the obvious, the hobby has gotten very pricey to stay as actively involved as I would like, which makes Chad's group breaks a godsend. Of course, I can still occasionally purge into a product on my own, but I do my best to avoid it. At one point I owned over 100,000 cards...all in sets and a few others sprinkled here and there, but a lull in employment forced me to sell off a lot of stuff about five years ago.
Fortunately, that time also gave me the opportunity to really re-assess my collecting focus to keep within budget. These days, my card collection consists of the following:
Fred Taylor (only RCs, Autographs and Game Used from his rookie season, no inserts/parallels)
Dirk Nowitzki (again, same criteria as my Taylor stash)
Rookie cards of Ryan Braun and Kameron Loe (went to same high school as I)
Jaguars team sets (from 1995-present...and yes, I am a proud Jaguars fan, deal with it)
And in non-sports:
Bench Warmer (I usually work on one autograph set at a time and sell after a while)
Archer (my favorite current TV show now has its own cards from Cryptozoic) (master set)
James Bond 007 cards (only a set or two and very picky with what I get)
1992 Marvel Masterpieces (for any comic fan, an awesome set that has withstood 20+ years for its design)
Other sports stuff I collect:
Los Angeles Kings SGAs (stadium giveaways), especially bobbleheads and other memorabilia
Dale Earnhardt Jr (I have a couple signed pieces)
Teams I follow: LA Kings, Jags, Brewers, Manchester (f'n!) United
Looking forward to chatting with all of you as time goes on. In the near future, I will post my want lists in the appropriate threads for all to view.
